Often his work explores the seedy underside of small-town U.S.A. (e.g. Blue Velvet and the Twin Peaks television series) or sprawling metropolises (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive). Due to his peculiar style and focus on the American psyche, comedian Mel Brooks once called Lynch "Jimmy Stewart from Mars."

Even the most casual Star Wars and/or David Lynch scholar knows that Lynch was offered a gig directing Return of the Jedi and turned it down. Lynch's features at that point were Eraserhead and The Elephant Man -- both incredible examples of storytelling and world building on relatively controlled budgets. One can only surmise that something along those lines is what Lucas put the job in Lynch's path.

Film director David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive) is set to make a documentary about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the controversial guru who oversaw The Beatles' trip to India in 1968.
Lynch told New York magazine he plans to go to India to shoot the film, and will begin work in December. The documentary doesn't have a title yet, but Lynch has said it won't have a narrative and it also won't be "a talking heads kind of thing."
