What is Art Deco Interior Decorating?
Art deco was a period of art that existed in the United States from the late nineteen twenties right up until nineteen forty. This style of art was considered to be ultra modern at the time and was influenced heavily by the cubist and modernist movements of the early twentieth century. Recently there has been an art deco revival and with it more art deco interior decorating. People have looked to the past to find new ways to decorate their homes and with it have sought out art deco inspired works.
Art Deco Interior Decorating For Your Home
The art deco style of interior design can be very simple to build a home around; however it generally will look out of place with other styles so you are going to want to be sure that you want to totally commit to art deco interior decorating. Wall colors are important as many art deco designs inspired use of unique and bold colors throughout the home. Furniture may be difficult to find in good condition but many antique stores carry authentic art deco furniture.
If you are unable to go that route, many large department and specialty stores carry art deco styled furniture, although it may not be labeled as such. Any piece of furniture that looks ultra modern without having the bells and whistles of today’s furniture could be considered art deco. Low couches, brushed aluminum, sleek simple cushions are all hall marks of art deco interior decorating. Heavily lacquered wood pieces with extensive inlays and rounded corners represent some of the finer examples furniture from the art deco period. For woodwork it is best to try to find antiques although these can be quite expensive.
Many of the laminate wood furniture of today simply can not represent the fine craftsmanship present in art deco interior decorating from the twenties and thirties. For paintings and wall decorations, anything from the cubist movement would suit well. Modern art would be a good match as well or anything with simple lines and shapes. While art deco itself is viewed as rather opulent, the actual art work from the period was quite simple. In addition appliances throughout the home should be styled in an art deco manor – round fluid shapes with bright color and chrome will represent this period well. Art deco interior decorating is not for everyone, but if you are committed to styling your home in this manor the best thing to do is look for authentic representations and be sure to stick to your theme.
