Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area opens this weekend

Picnic and public user areas in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area will open this coming Saturday, April 28 2007. (The extensive 'protected' federal park runs along the Delaware River along the 'eastern side' of the Poconos. Towns along the river include Milford, Bushkill, Smithfield, Shawnee, and Water Gap). Numerous hiking trails, fishing spots, and campsites can be found throughout the area, as well as all kinds of wildlife.

Boat ramps to the Delaware are now open in most areas, and canoes and rafts should be available soon.

Milford and Smithfield beaches will officially open on June 16th.

Fees (and licenses) apply to some activities in the Park. Details can be found at
the National Park Service Website.

A word of caution. Observing the posted speed limits throughout the park is a good idea. White-tailed deer often cross Route 209 unexpectedly (and hitting one, will no doubt put a serious damper on your vacation and your car ... not to mention the deer). The Poconos Hotels, Resorts and Weather Station Blog
