Bob Barr: helping Obama win in 2008
This picture needs a LOLcat caption, doesn't it? Something like, "I CAN HAS INVISIBLE CORN ON THE COB?"
Yeah, for those of you who don't know, that's Bob Barr in the picture, the newly nominated presidential candidate from the Libertarian Party. If he looks familiar, it's because he is. You most likely saw him during the late years of the Clinton administration, when he was busy leading the cry for impeachment. He was one of the more vocal "family values" champions during those years.
But don't write him off as just another a boring, puritanical Republican drone yet. He has a wild streak, too.
In the early 1990's, Barr was just getting a taste of elected politics, and liked it a lot! He probably even liked it better than the whipped cream he licked off a couple of attractive women during a Leukemia Society luncheon in 1992. Boy, did he know how to liven up what would have been a dull occasion!
Barr's main hobby as the 20th century drew to a close was finding reasons to sue Bill Clinton, including one defamation suit claiming $30 million for emotional suffering Barr endured during the impeachment debacle (even though Barr was the one doing the impeaching). Turns out that, on the very day that he filed that $30 million suit, he was stumping for a House bill that would have capped claims for "pain and suffering" at $250,000.
Awkward, huh? Oh, and the defamation suit got thrown out.
Barr was also one of the Republican leaders singled out by Hustler publisher Larry Flynt for sticking his flag in the moral high ground while hiding a past that included extramarital affairs, and an unwanted pregnancy ending in abortion. Thus far he has only obliquely and vaguely answered questions about the abortion incident.
But the best thing about Bob Barr is that with his (hypocrisy notwithstanding) trumpeting of "traditional values" and his tendency to believe that, whatever the situation, the nuclear option is the first option to try, he's bound to siphon off some of the far right nutcase vote from John McCain. I can't see a way that Barr's candidacy hurts Obama, at least not yet.
