AAI just received the following email from Denali National Park and Preserve: A rare look at Denali’s prehistoric cultural past came to light when a portion of a prehistoric Athabaskan arrow was discovered by park visitors in mid-May 2009 along the gravel bar of the Teklanika River. The barbed arrow point, made of antler (probably caribou) is significantly worn, but it still has characteristics that indicate it was fashioned by human hands, and what it was used for. The cone-shaped end of the twelve inch long piece was fashioned to fit into the shaft of the arrow. The “tip” end has been broken off, ... Read Full Story

Army veteran, candidate for Congress, husband and father. Those are just a few of the roles Doug Heckman takes on each day. With a plethora of family duties and a major congressional campaign under way in the Heckman house, Doug and his 18 year old son Dan needed to take a respite to Alaska. The trip was filled with fun, adventure and plenty of bonding time. The trip Doug and Dan left for Alaska on a typically hot Atlanta afternoon. "We gained four hours on a seven and a half hour flight to Anchorage International Airport," Doug recalls. "We got our rental car and ... Read Full Story

The best sightseeing I have ever experienced was this year during a recent trip to Denali National Park in Alaska. I could not have hoped for better weather, wildlife viewing opportunities or friends to share it all with. Our accommodations at the Denali Princess Lodge were fantastic as well. This fall I was lucky enough to get a call from my brother, an aspiring photographer. He had just been awarded a Fall Drive In Permit to Denali National Park. They are issued by lottery and allow a limited number of drivers to enter the park by vehicle. There are only four days in ... Read Full Story

Guest on the blog today: my wife, Rebecca. I hit the summit of Denali, aka Mt. McKinley (though all climbers and most of the rest of the world outside the borders of the USA call it Denali) on June 12th, 2007. It was warmer up there than I expected; one of the warmest summit days on record actually: 0 °F (-20 C). In fact, I'd experienced much colder already on lower parts of the mountains. This was my second attempt: in 2003, I had...
