Safe House
Directed by: Daniel Espinosa
Starring: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Brendan Gleeson, Vera Farmiga

The latest in a loooong string of Denzel Washington action/suspense films is Safe House. Directed by unknown Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa, the plot pairs Washington with Ryan Reynolds and has them on the run after the safe house Washington's character is placed in is attacked. Garnering mixed reviews from critics, Safe House will offer few surprises but it does have a great cast that should make it worth seeing.
See it? Sure.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

The sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth brings back holdover Josh Hutcherson to depart on a quest to find his missing grandfather (Michael Caine). Gone from the first movie is Brendan Fraser. He is replaced here with Dwayne Johnson, who is Hutcherson's stepdad, and joins him on the adventure. This is a cheesy family action movie that should provide enough enjoyment for Mom, Dad, and the kids, but anyone going to the movies this weekend looking to see a great film should probably skip this one.

Rampart (Limited)

The second feature by talented writer/director Oren Moverman, Rampart takes an in-depth look at a dirty LAPD officer. Set in 1999, in the midst of the Rampart Division scandal, the film follows Harrelson's character as he attempts to subjugate his life. Harrelson gives one the best performances of last year as disgraced Dave Brown. He is under fire at work, at home, and even alone with his own demons. Rampart is a gripping and authentic look at a fascinating character and his world.
See it? Yes.

The Vow
Directed by: Michael Sucsy
Starring: Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Jessica Lange

Paige (Rachel McAdams) and her husband, Leo (Channing Tatum) are in a car accident and Paige suffers from amnesia after waking up from a coma. Leo is faced with trying to get his wife to fall in love with him again. This is Nicholas Sparks without the spark. Expect an eye-rolling turn from noted thespian Tatum as he screams, "My wife doesn't remember me!" A lobotomy might be less painful.
See it? Nope.

Directed by: Liza Johnson
Starring: Linda Cardellini, Michael Shannon, John Slattery

A soldier (Linda Cardellini) returns from serving in the military and finds her old life isn't quite the same. Set in small-town Ohio, Return offers a glimpse of what soldiers may encounter when they rotate back to civilization. Cardellini gives a poignant performance, as does the rest of the impressive cast. Return is a hard-hitting drama that deals with an issue most people take for granted: the treatment of soldiers after they serve.
See it? Yes.

Undefeated (Limited)
Directed by: Daniel Lindsay, T.J. Martin

Nominated for the Best Documentary Academy Award for 2012, Undefeated follows the Manassas Tigers as they struggle on and off the field. The story of the underdog Memphis team has won national acclaim at festivals and has sold remake rights to The Weinstein Company. Much more in-depth than a simple Friday Night Lights-type story, Undefeated tells the stories of young men who may only have one good thing in their lives: football.
