Derrick Rose, NCAA Penalizes Memphis In Derrick Rose Test Case

Derrick Rose's college team at Memphis must vacate its record 38-victory season that ended with a fantastic run to the Final Four because of the Bulls point guard's evident role while competing as an academically ineligible player.

Although the NCAA Committee on Infractions' report Thursday did not name a player, Rose was the only Memphis player to match the description.

The player in the report was accused of having another person take his SAT so he would be eligible to play at Memphis. He had failed the ACT on three occasions in Rose's hometown of Chicago, but the SAT was taken in Detroit, the report said.

The Educational Testing Service's cancellation of the player's test score fit into the NCAA's "strict liability" category, and the infractions committee did not need to investigate further because it meant the player was ineligible before the season.

The NCAA attempted to contact the player twice to attain proof he took the exam, according to the report, but he didn't respond.

Rose said two weeks ago the allegations were false.

"I know I took the test," he said.

In a statement issued through his attorney Thursday, Rose said: "It is satisfying to see that the NCAA could find no wrongdoing on my part in their ruling. It is important for people to understand that I complied of everything that was asked of me while at the university, including my full cooperation in the university's investigation of this issue, and was ultimately cleared to play in the entire 2007-08 season by the NCAA Clearinghouse and the university. I look forward to putting this behind me."
