Red Wings reach the brink of Stanley Cup title repeat

Chris Osgood made 22 saves and the Detroit Red Wings moved within a victory of their fifth National Hockey League title since 1997 with a 5-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Red Wings, bolstered by the return of Pavel Datsyuk from a foot injury, seized a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup championship series and can defend the title they won last year by winning game six Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins must win at home to force a seventh game back in Detroit next Friday.

Osgood turned in his 15th career playoff shutout, his third in the finals and second of this year.

Datsyuk, who led the Red Wings in scoring during the regular season but had missed the past seven playoff games, assisted on Daniel Cleary's goal 13:32 into the game, which put Detroit ahead 1-0 after the first period.

Valtteri Filppula stretched the Red Wings' lead just 1:44 into the second period and Detroit took advantage of Pittsburgh penalties for three power-play goals later in the period to seize command of the game and the series.

Niklas Kronwall put the Red Wings ahead 3-0 with a power-play goal 6:11 into the second and Brian Rafalski followed 2:15 later off a pass from Datsyuk for another extra-man situation tally.

"Pavel helped us in a lot of situations," Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg said. "He really played good."

Zetterberg netted a power-play goal 4:20 before the end of the second period to chase Penguins starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

"We had a dominant power play and worked really hard," Zetterberg said. "We wanted to shoot more and spend more time in their end and that helped us score more goals."

In Stanley Cup finals where teams split the first two games, the game five winner has gone on to capture 14 of past 19 titles.
