A community portal about Diabetes mellitus with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder, specifically affecting carbohydrate metabolism. It is a disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia. It is a metabolic disease that requires medical diagnosis, treatment and lifestyle changes. The World Health Organization recognizes three main forms of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes , although these three "types" of diabetes are more accurately considered patterns of pancreatic failure rather than single diseases. Type 1 is generally due to autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing cells — beta cells — while type 2 and gestational diabetes are due to insulin resistance by tissues. Type 2 may progress to destruction of the insulin -producing cells of the pancreas, but is still considered Type 2, even though insulin administration may be required.
Just because there is a diabetic cookbook available in the store, you should not think that it will help your condition. People with diabetes do need to live with a lot of restrictions in their diet. With the help of so-called diabetic diets, they try to induce diabetics into buying their books. But they do [...]
Winter is just around the corner so I thought I’ll put up an excerpt from a conversation that I had which would be helpful to diabetics during winter time.
Does climate in any way, direct or indirect, affect diabetes? Warm and Cold temperatures have no direct effect on diabetes control but can affect it indirectly. [...]

Background:
The current epidemics of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and Alzheimer's disease (AD) all represent insulin-resistance diseases. Previous studies linked insulin resistance diseases to high fat diets or exposure to streptozotocin, a nitrosamine-related compound that causes T2DM, NASH, and AD-type neurodegeneration. We hypothesize that low-level exposures to nitrosamines that are widely present...
New findings by UT Southwestern researchers suggest that a drug already used to treat autoimmune disorders might also help slow the destruction of insulin-producing cells in patients recently diagnosed with insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, formerly known as juvenile diabetes, cells in the pancreas called beta cells, which produce insulin, are destroyed by an autoimmune process...

Today 50 percent of our pets are overweight or obese, which certainly can predispose them to developing diabetes. Both dogs and cats develop the same two types of diabetes seen in humans. The greater majority of dogs develop Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus where the body simply does not produce any insulin.
Something like insulin for people with Type 1 Diabetes costs around $115 per vial (for Novolog or Lantus insulin). That same vial gets discounted to $30 per vial if bought in quantities of 10 through Canadian pharmacy websites.Through most American insurance companies, the co-pay is still 50%, or $56 per vial. What are American insurance companies doing with the extra $26?

Background:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder associated with an increased risk of type II diabetes mellitus. The results of previous research about the association of the VNTR polymorphism in 5-prime flanking region of the insulin (INS) gene with PCOS have been inconsistent. The present study was to investigate the association of the INS-VNTR polymorphism with PCOS in a Han Chinese population.

How does the developing pancreas in an embryo 'know' which cells are to produce insulin and which cells are to have other assignments? Researchers need to understand this if they want to be able to treat type-1 diabetes with stem cells developed into insulin-producing beta cells.
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Pregnant women with type 1 diabetes had fewer severe hypoglycemic episodes when they started a preprandial insulin analog regimen before conception rather than afterward.
Pancreas is responsible for producing insulin which regulates the sugar level in the body. All those who know what diabetes is would know the importance of insulin in body (and hence the importance of pancreas). Pancreas also produces pancreatic juice ...
