 "10/3/2009 - Just got mine" 2009-10-03
By Allen D. Aleshire
Just got mine from Kodak after much research on this site and others. The latest firmware does fix the sound problem. Mine sounds fine. I work in the video field and have quite a bit of experience with true HD and high end cameras. This is not a high end camera and shouldn't be thought of as such. It is a very good pocket camcorder with lots of features... mainly... the pocket size, which is why I purchased it.

The 1080p setting shouldn't be used unless there is little movement in the scene. Not that useful... again, that is ok. It is a pocket camcorder. I really like the plug-n-play ability, the capacity of the external memory, the switch for closeups, the replaceable battery, the tine size, and the quality of all the other settings than 1080p. For what I wanted, this is the best one out there. I would recommend this.

Definitely uploads to Facebook and other online formats in short order. NICE!!

 "Shaky" 2009-10-03
By Chas (NY)
If used on a tri pod, This camera is the best around. However, if you need something thats portable, this camera is not the way to go.
The Flip as well as the Vado perform much better as a stand alone. The video quality on both the cameras are very good with sharp colors and crisp sound.

Sadly, I sent mine back.

BTW - Kodak's support center is so bad it's almost funny.

 "Almost perfect..." 2009-10-02
By B. A Reichle (Calabasas, CA)
Wow. This thing is the bee's knees. I have been holding off buying a "Flip" cam since my old DSC-T500 sony digital camera filmed such great HD videos I had no need..

Now Kodak (hmm) just released their Zi8 and I kept hearing good things about it, and its also Sold Out almost everywhere. I got my hands on one, tested it out, and JESUS! This camera rules!! A perfect pocket camera with stunning video quality, A PLUG FOR MICROPHONE INPUTS (TAKE THAT FLIP!), hdmi, image stabilization, face detection, and 1080P. Yes thats right.. 1080P for under $200 in your pocket.

It has its flaws, nothing can be perfect right? The zoom is jerky (not a big deal but seriously stupid) and the red light in the front cant be turned off when recording (not yet, future firmware update maybe?)

In the category of cheap pocket cams, you cant beat this.. (right now).

Pros:
-1080p but, 720p with 60 frames/second
-Tiny, its about the same size as a blackberry or iphone
-AUDIO INPUT Jack- This is huge!!
-Great rich colors compared to the flip and others
-Macro mode for filming close up
-Image stabilization (it might not be the best, but it does work just enough to be a good thing, flip or others DONT have this)
-up to 32GB SDHC/SD card support (Endless Videos)
-HDMI output
-Tripod mount, nice big display, comes with HDMI cable
-Face Detection (another first for this group)
Cons

-No way to turn off red recording light (future firmware upgrade?)
-1080P has the "Jello" effect when doing fast movement (future firmware upgrade?)
-Mono built in mic (but not a huge deal because of audio input and the built in mic isnt bad sounding)
-Still camera mode isn't great (but who cares)
-menu system is real basic
-Final Cut Pro chokes on 720P 60 Frames/sec and must be imported using compressor (all other modes import fine- Future Update?)
-Low Light quality is poor (expected for this price range, they all suck for lowlight)
-No headphone Jack (to listen to mic input...EEK, wish they could at least make the A/V port live during recording so it could be used, Firmware possible?)

 "Ok camera" 2009-09-30
By Charles D. Martin (Sumpter, Oregon USA)
The video is a bit shakey if you walk around. But I can live with it. The only thing I do not like is that you can not put date/time stamp on the video or the snapshot. This is lame. Why enter date/time on the camera if you can't use it. Simple software issue. I need the date/time stamp for legal issues when taking a picture. If on the video would be a bonus, but not a killer. But why not have the time stamp option to be on both.

"Wonderful easy cheap way to do 1080p videos !!!" 2009-09-30
By Fred R. Jerina (Albuquerque, NM)
I received my Zi8 a couple of days ago and I love it. I had a problem at first with a memory chip that did not allow recordings of 1080p longer than a couple of seconds but after working with on-line chat with Kodak I discovered it was my old 1 gig chip (that I used in my digital camera) that was not working correctly. I reformatted the chip and now all is fine.

I am recording some great 1080p videos (which I prefer over the 720p ones) and they play great over my Samsung 1080p LCD HDTV via the included HDMI cable.

I was also pleasantly surprised that I can play my 1080p video clips via an HDMI cable from my Sony Vaio laptop (that has a Blu-Ray drive) in 1080p!!! I upload my videos via the ArcSoft MediaImpressions software program (included) to my laptop and can play them back in 1080p via the program itself. Easier than using the camcorder for playback to the TV. I can easily upload the 1080p videos to YouTube (but are then optimized within YouTube for their 720p mode).

If you want an easy way to take video clips on travel or at parties you should consider this camcorder.
