Question by : Sony Nex-5 or a standard DSLR?

Lenses are the strong and weak points on the Nex.
It’s a new mount, and currently only 3 lenses are available. Sony is developing other lenses, and allowing other companies to make Nex (E) mount lenses without paying royalties, but they’re not out yet.
But because the camera doesn’t use a mirror for a viewfinder, it is thinner than a true DSLR, and you can get reasonably priced adapters to use pretty much any lens ever made for a 35mm camera on it. The limitation here is you’ll almost always need to focus manually, and set your own aperture. For stars, focus is easy – set the lens for infinity.
Are you looking to take astronomy photos, or are you looking to take night time shots of people or buildings that show stars?
The Nex performs well in low light, and I’ve used one for astronomy photos with my telescope. While it can’t compete with a dedicated cooled astronomy camera, it’s as good as a DSLR for this purpose, maybe better because Sony allows you to magnify the image on the screen up to 14x when manually focusing.
Shots with people in the foreground and stars in the sky will be a challenge for any camera because even with a fast lens, the exposure you’d need to capture stars is too long for getting a clear shot of things that breathe.
Here’s a couple quick and dirty astronomy shots I took with my Nex-5 the first time I set up my scope when I had my Nex with me. These were shot with “aperture preferred” auto exposure using an astro-physics 140EDF telescope as the camera lens. In camera terms, this would be a 1050mm f7.5 apo lens. There’s a little camera shake in them as I didn’t have my remote release with me that night.
