A Dinosaur guide. Dinosaurs were vertebrate animals that dominated the terrestrial ecosystem for over 160 million years, first appearing approximately 230 million years ago. Our knowledge about dinosaurs is derived from a variety of fossil and non-fossil records, including fossilized bones, feces, trackways, and other impressions found in dig sites.
One of the Tyrannosaurus rex's direct ancestors was little more than a pint-sized reptile, according to an international team of researchers. A recently rediscovered dinosaur skull shows part of the T. rex's evolution.
