THE Caves of Androzani has been voted the top Doctor Who TV tale in a new poll.

The story gained the highest score in a poll in Doctor Who Magazine, in which 6,700 people took part.

It aired in four episodes in March 1984 and marked the last appearance of 5th Doctor Peter Davison and the first appearance of the 6th incarnation played by Colin Baker.

As the Doctor regenerated, he was asked by companion Peri Brown what was happening and replied: "Change, my dear, and it seems not a moment too soon..."

Davison told the magazine: "As I think David Tennant will be finding out now, it's a traumatic experience to leave Doctor Who, even if it's your own decision. So I didn't really watch Doctor Who after I left, until it came back, of course - and I always thought it would."

Davison did, however, reprise his role in two charity specials, in 1993 and 2007.

The rest of the top 10 favourite Doctor Who stories are, in descending order from second place: Blink (with David Tennant, writer Steven Moffat); Genesis of the Daleks (with Tom Baker); The Talons of Weng-Chiang (with Tom Baker); The Empty Child (with Christopher Eccleston, written by Steven Moffat); Human Nature/The Family of Blood (David Tennant); Pyramids of Mars (Tom Baker); City of Death (Tom Baker); The Robots of Death (Tom Baker); Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways (Christopher Eccleston).

Overall, stories featuring Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston scored highest, followed by those starring David Tennant.
