Dog Owners Guide to Dog Kennels

by Tab Pierce

Dog kennels are a great way to provide shelter and security for your puppy or dog. A dog kennel can be a boarding place where you leave your dog when you go on vacation, a portable kennel that you transport him in, or a permanent home that is outside in your backyard. You may need one or all three types of dog kennels for your dog and your particular situation.

When your dog has his own kennel you can have peace of mind knowing that he is safe and sheltered. You won’t have to worry about him jumping the fence or getting into fights with other dogs or chasing after children. If a dog is properly introduced and trained to their kennel, he will consider it to be his home and be quite happy there.

There are some things you need to consider if you want to build the dog kennel on your own. Be sure that you build the kennel in a place where your dog will be well protected from any elements such as extreme cold, heat, snow, rain or wind. Dogs that spend a great deal of time outdoors will need to have proper shelter and have the ability to stay cool during the summer and warm during the winter.

Be sure the dog kennel always has fresh water available for your dog. Another thing you will want to provide for your dog is a dog bed or blanket to stay comfortable. Dog kennels should also have a cement or other type of flooring in order to keep the dog dry.

Before you build or erect a dog kennel you need to certain that it’s the right size to fit your dog. You want your dog to have enough room for standing and moving about in. If you have a puppy you will of course need to allow for the fact that he is going to get bigger so make sure the kennel will be the proper size for an adult dog.

Another type of dog kennel that you may want to consider is a portable kennel. This can be used to transport your pet when you are traveling. You can find a wide range of dog kennels at pet stores to choose from.

When buying a portable kennel for your dog, just be sure that it is the right size. There are some pretty standard sizes that portable kennels come in and usually are not very difficult to set up and then dismantle when you are not using them. If your dog is large it might be necessary to special order a portable kennel that will fit him.

Boarding kennels are another form of dog kennel. These are places where you can leave your dog to be cared for when you are out of town. Before you put your dog in a boarding kennel you should do a thorough investigation of the facility and the business.
