A portal dedicated to life in Dominca. Dominica is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea. It should not be confused with the Dominican Republic.

According to Wikipedia, the official name of the island is Commonwealth of Dominica. Dominica's pre-Columbian name was Wai'tu kubuli, which means "her body is tall." The indigenous people of the island, the Caribs, have a territory which resembles the Indian reserves of Canada. Because the island went through a period of French occupation, and lies between two overseas départements (Département d'outre-mer) of France : Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south; the island is sometimes called "French Dominica". It also has the nickname "The Nature Isle of the Caribbean" due to its seemingly unspoiled natural beauty.

The isle of Dominica is one of the youngest islands in the Lesser Antilles, and it is still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity. It is a lush island of mountainous rainforests, home of many rare plant, animal and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions but heavy rainfall can be expected inland. The Sisserou parrot is featured on the Dominica flag. Dominica's economy is heavily dependent on both tourism and agriculture.

This is my story of how I came to be a retired but active Storyteller in Newham. "Ok you can go to England," my mother said, " In your sister's letter she suggested that you should join her. At least you will be able to get a job over there." I was so happy I jumped with joy. I knew if I came to England there would be a lot of opportunities for me including getting an artificial eye fitted. I was born in Dominica in the West Indies. This island is not to be confused with the Dominica Republic. Dominica lies between the ... Read Full Story

Dominica This being my first visit to this part of the world, I didn't really know what to expect. Like everyone else, for a long time I thought Dominica and the Dominican Republic were the same. However, I soon learned that The Dominican Republic shares an island with Haiti and is near Puerto Rico and Dominica is in the southern Caribbean near Grenada. Dominica, What an Island! A land of many wonders , but one of the most enjoyable would have to be Screw's Sulphur Springs. Nestled in the rain forest near Trafalgar Falls, a visit will bring relaxation, refreshment and take away five ... Read Full Story

Dominica Nestled between Guadeloupe and Martinique lies the island of Dominica. Unspoiled , the island 's rich rain forest is home to many rare birds including Sisserou and Jacquot parrots.   Dominica is also home to the last remaining Carib Indians, where they have been calling home for almost a 1000 years. When Columbus attempted to land on November 3, 1493, the Caribs held him at bay , he christened the island Dominica and continued northward without making landfall. Due in part to the lack of hospitality shown by the Caribs, the island was largely ignored for the next 200 years. And as ... Read Full Story

"Identity! Sometimes it makes my head hurt -sometimes my heart. So what am I? Where do I fit into Britain, 2000 and beyond?" Andrea Levy, a writer, is English born and bred. But her parents are Jamaican, and the colour of her skin not white. As a consequence, she is not always made to feel at home in the country she thinks of as home. In this article by her from The Guardian Weekend, February 19, 2000, she explores the question of identity, and its significance in a multi-cultural society like the United Kingdom. elt.britishcouncil.org.pl/elt/i_engl.htm Read Full Story
