The radio talk show host Don Imus, possibly the grandfather shock jock, began his talk show Imus in the Morning in the 1970s, gaining steam in the 90s Democratic era. Known for off color humor, public feuds (most notoriously with fellow shock jock Howard Stern), and flamboyant law suits, Imus finally hit a wall when he made egregious comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team. Within ten days, after an on-air apology and media hubbub, Imus in the Morning was history.
Given that Imus was born in 1940 and represents a voice that was more prevalent 30 years ago, it's possible that the Imus era is simply over. Is this the beginning of the end of the shock jock era? Does it suggest a climate finally shifting? Or is it an isolated case of going too far?
On the other hand, Imus is a survivor. A reinvented Imus may return (sooner than anyone thinks) to take the lime light in whole new ways. Watch for it here -- and meanwhile, share your ideas and opinions on this legendary lighting rod.
From 'Nappy Headed Hos" to "You Lie": The Changing Definition of Racism
It seems so much longer than that. Don Imus, Imus in the Morning, commenting on the tattooed Rutgers University women's basketball team's rough look, called them 'nappy-headed hos' as other members of the show called them "hardcore hos." Bernard McGuirk referred to their last game as "jigaboos versus the wannabes," a reference to black director Spike Lee's movie School Daze.
IMUS: That's some rough girls from Rutgers. Man, they got tattoos and—
McGUIRK: Some hard-core hos.
IMUS: That's some nappy headed hos. I'm gonna tell you that now, man, that's some—whew. And the girls from Tennessee, they all look cute, you know, so, like—kinda like—I don't know.
McGUIRK: A Spike Lee thing.
IMUS: Yeah.
McGUIRK: The Jigaboos vs. the Wannabes—that movie that he had.
Did Imus cross a racial line? Probably, but at the same time, there was the continued Ebonics debate in this country that cited we should teach in public schools the language of the black culture in this country. In other words, liberals wanted it both ways. They wanted to be offended by Imus; yet they wanted to recognize the street language the glorifies the use of hos.
Of course, it set off a huge race debate in the United States. Imus lost his long-time gig on the radio and on MSNBC. He eventually apologized.
I bring this up because of redefining what is racist and offensive in this country. Obama gave his healthcare speech on 09/09/09. In a section of the speech in which Obama claims illegal aliens would not be covered by the public option, something that has been proven a lie, Congressman Joe Wilson shouts 'you lie!'
In just over two years, whites in this country came together and supported a black candidate for president; yet, the definition of racism narrowing. 'You lie' is now considered racist and has created a controversy just as big as Imus' nappy-headed ho comment.
So many Democrats have come out to claim this very thing. Questioning authority isn't racist. It's American. Read our history books--not the books the liberal have rewritten. Our country was founded because our founding fathers, patriots, questioned authority. Would they be considered racists today in the history books of the King of England was black?
It's time to call idiots like Jimmy Carter on this. There was nothing in Congressman Wilson's comments that referred to race, but we now have this carefully organized play of the race card to help Obama get away with what the American people don't want. If you oppose him, they too are ready to call you a racist. This broadening of the definition is dangerous.
