Blood plasma is the liquid component of blood. Plasma is the largest single component of blood, making up about 55% of total blood volume. Blood plasma contains many vital proteins including fibrinogen, globulins and human serum albumin.

Serum refers to blood plasma in which clotting factors (such as fibrin) have been removed naturally by allowing the blood to clot prior to isolating the liquid component.

Plasma is mainly composed of water, blood proteins, and inorganic electrolytes. It serves as transport medium for glucose, lipids, amino acids, hormones, metabolic end products, carbon dioxide and oxygen.

A study of the binding of C.I. Direct Yellow 9 to human serum albumin using optical spectroscopy and molecular modeling

The mechanism of interaction between C.I. Direct Yellow 9 and human serum albumin was studied using spectroscopic methods including fluorescence spectra, UV–vis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and circular dichroism (CD). The quenching mechanism was investigated in terms of the association constants, number of binding sites and basic thermodynamic parameters. The distance between the human serum albumin donor and the acceptor dye was 3.64 nm as derived from fluorescence resonance energy... Read Full Story

Formation of an adduct by clenbuterol, a β-adrenoceptor agonist drug, and serum albumin in human saliva at the acidic pH of the stomach

Clenbuterol (CLB) is an antiasthmatic drug used also illegally as a lean muscle mass enhancer in both humans and animals. CLB and amine-related drugs in general are nitrosatable, thus raising concerns regarding possible genotoxic/carcinogenic activity. Oral administration of CLB raises the issue of its possible transformation by salivary nitrite at the acidic pH of gastric juice. In acidic human saliva CLB was rapidly transformed to the CLB arenediazonium ion. This suggests a reaction of CLB... Read Full Story

What’s Involved in Donating Plasma, Platelets, and Blood

by Rob Tarmaran If the idea of donating blood makes you uneasy, you’re not alone. Many people are uncomfortable with needles and worry that it will hurt. You would be surprised how easy the process actually is and how much good you can do with a single donation. Blood products, including whole blood, platelets, and plasma, are used in a number of life saving procedures. Burn victims, surgery patients, trauma victims, and people with hemophilia may all need blood donations to survive... Read Full Story

Binding interaction of indomethacin with human serum albumin

The interaction between indomethacin and human serum albumin (HSA) was investigated by fluorescence quenching technique and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The results of fluorescence titration revealed that indomethacin, strongly quench the intrinsic fluorescence of HSA by static quenching and nonradiative energy transfer. The binding site number n and the apparent binding constant KA, were calculated using linear and nonlinear fit to the experimental data. The distance r between donor ( HSA... Read Full Story

Use of albumin creatinine ratio and urine albumin concentration as a screening test for albuminuria in an Indo-Asian population

Albuminuria (>30 mg/day) based on 24 h urine albumin excretion is one of the criteria for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and a predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Differences in urine albumin concentration and creatinine excretion rates between Indo-Asians and other populations may require different threshold values for detection of albuminuria. We compared the use of spot urine albumin concentration and urine albumin to creatinine excretion ratio for detection of albuminuria in this... Read Full Story

The "albumin effect" and drug glucuronidation: bovine serum albumin and fatty acid-free human serum albumin enhance the glucuronidation of UDP-gluc...

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fatty acid-free human serum albumin (HSAFAF) reduce the K(m) values for UGT2B7 substrates by sequestering inhibitory long-chain fatty acids released by incubations of human liver microsomes (HLM) and HEK293 cells expressing this enzyme. However, the scope of the "albumin effect" is unknown. In this investigation we characterized the effects of albumin on the kinetics of 4-methylumbelliferone (4MU) glucuronidation by UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A1, 1A6... Read Full Story

Serum albumin and mortality in very low birth weight infants

Serum albumin is a predictor of outcome in adults but its role in paediatric patients is unclear. Earliest albumin was not associated with mortality or morbidity in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. However the lowest serum albumin had a statistically significant inverse correlation with mortality and potentially plays a prognostic role in VLBW neonates . Arch Dis Child Fetal Neonatal Ed. 2008 Jan 24. Morris I, McCallion N, El-Khuffash A, Molloy EJ. National Maternity Hospital, Dublin... Read Full Story
