The brothers and sisters of Duane Morrison, and their families, have been contacted by various press organizations and others concerning the tragic events which occurred at Platte Canyon High School on Wednesday. In response to these contacts, the immediate family wishes to provide the following information.
We would first offer our prayers and concerns for the family of Emily Keyes. We realize that they have suffered a loss that no family should have to bear. As loving parents ourselves, we can truly understand the sense of devastation and loss they have suffered. We will never understand why Duane took the life of this vibrant and loving young lady.
We would further offer our prayers and concerns for the other students who were taken hostage or assaulted. Like the students and their families, we have children and loved ones and can understand the fear and concern that existed throughout the incoherent events.
The events at Platte Canyon High School involving Duane Morrison shocked the family of Duane Morrison as much as they shocked the rest of our communities. The only information the family has about the events are those reported to us by the press and law enforcement officials. It was accurately reported that Duane sent us a letter Wednesday, which we received Thursday. His letter expressed nothing about Platte Canyon High School. The reported actions of Duane are inconsistent with all we know about Duane and how he lived his life. Duane lived in the Denver area for over 10 years and in the recent past chose to drive and camp in several western states. He apparently returned to Colorado only recently. Nothing about Duane or our relationships with him suggested that he would ever do something like this.
We would also offer our prayers and thoughts to the entire Platte Canyon High School and Bailey communities, and we pray that all who were harmed may by God's grace be restored. We would pray that these tragic events would somehow be turned to good for all those affected.
Lastly, we would ask our communities to realize that we have also suffered a terrible loss. We would ask that those seeking more information would for the present allow us our privacy as we grieve and try to make sense of the events of the last several days.
All questions for the family should be directed to the family's attorney, Richard Peterson, 303 793 3400.
