With Freeney Out; Colts Move Fast to Sign DE Rice

Rice

With defensive end Dwight Freeney possibly on the shelf with a foot injury, the team moved quickly on Tuesday to pick up recently released DE Simeon Rice off waivers. Rice was let go by the Broncos Friday as the team looked to send a message for its poor play on defense. Freeney was injured in Sunday night’s game vs the Chargers, and after the game was in a walking boot after it looked as if a Chargers offensive lineman rolled on his left foot and ankle.

Right now it looks as if Freeney will miss four or more games according to team president Bill Polian. “We anticipate that Dwight will miss some significant amount of time,” Polian said. The Colts themselves have not released the full details of the injury. Freeney is making about $12 mil a season, and the team is counting on him to be out there, as so far this season he has 32 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Rice has just six tackles and five assists this season after signing with the Broncos for one-year at $3 mil. He was not active for two games this past October. He knows the Colts system after playing for Tony Dungy for one season, and has 121 career sacks, second among active players to just Giants DE Michael Strahan.
