Edward Brooke is an American politician and was the first African American to be elected to the United States Senate. He was elected as a Republican from Massachusetts in 1966. He would remain the only African American to be sent to the senate until Democrat Carol Moseley Braun in 1993. He has recently been in the news for having an affair with Barbara Walters in the 1970s.
Senator Edward W. Brooke

Mr. Brooke, a Massachusetts Republican who in 1966 became the first African-American elected to the United States Senate since Reconstruction was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. He underwent a modified radical double mastectomy and removal of lymph nodes. He is now retired and living on a horse and cattle farm. Barbara Walters has recently talked to Oprah Winfrey about a several year long affair with Mr. Brooke.
