NEW YORK (AP) — New York’s City Council has passed a nonbinding resolution asking the Education Department to observe two important Muslim holidays. But Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city is so diverse schools can’t observe every holiday. The city has the nation’s largest school system. A 2008 study by Columbia University’s Teachers College estimates at least 10 percent of its 1.1 million students are Muslim. The resolution was passed Tuesday. I just learned this from an online muslim friend! I will quote what she said: “It is the Eid (festival) of sacrifice. We only have two holidays in Islam…Eid al-fitr and Eid al-adha. Eid al-fitr is the eid after the month of Ramadan is over, breaking of the fast. Eid al-Adha commemorates Prophet Ibrahim because Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son Ishmael…and when Ibrahim (peace on him) was going to sacrifice his son, Allah sent down a sheep instead to be sacrificed.
