This stinks all the way around...
Blackburn’s El-Hadji Diouf claims that he was racially harrassed and heckled during the Rovers’ match with Everton on Sunday. Everton is demanding an apology from Diouf saying “That is a wholly false allegation and I really would like him to retract that allegation and apologise to the supporters and staff of this football club.”
Everton’s communications director wasn’t done though, he kept going…
“I don’t think there’s a worse allegation in modern sport than racism and it works both ways. At the moment, and from my perspective, it looks like Mr Diouf is accusing Everton fans of racist behaviour. The police will tell you that is completely untrue and in such circumstances we would expect him to apologise and retract his allegations.
“We would like a retraction and an apology because they are completely groundless. We find them offensive and a lot of our supporters have been in touch with the club to say that they find them offensive.”
Ok, I agree, about the worst thing you can say to anyone is a racial epithet, and especially when that person is at their job, that just makes it worse. No one goes to work to be heckled. Buuuuuuuttttttttttt, Mr. Diouf surely knew what he was getting in to when he signed on to play pro Soccer in Europe. Did he think the fans there were nice? ;o)
With Everton immediately jumping to the defense of its fans {with semmingly no first hand knowledge of the incident and no proof that Diouf is lying} they just make themselves look worse. Ever met that kid who misbehaves and then as soon as you tell them to stop they turn around and tell everyone else “Be quiet guys!”, as if they were doing something right? This is kind of how Everton looks right now. Good and bad at the same time…but most of all, sneaky.
I know that Diouf is accused of racially harrassing a kid during the match, but doesn’t that sound like someone lashing out because they too are being harrassed? It does to me!
I’m not condoning this either way. If Everton fans were throwing bananas at Diouf, shame on them! If he was taunting a kid, shame on him, but let’s not act like he’s wrong and Everton is right. Racial slurs are ever-present in the world today, but that doesn’t mean we can tolerate them. I’m concerned that Everton is tolerating the misbehavior of their fans at Diouf’s expense.
How long will it take before someone steps forward and says ”Stop the madness!”? I used to have a coach when I was a kid who would always say “Soccer is a gentlemen’s game.” Well, I’m afraid chivalry is dead in Everton and it makes me sad. Please, let’s all admit our failures and move on. Everton, their fans, Diouf, everyone who’s ever said something they regret at a sporting event. Real men won’t tolerate this stuff. No one gets an edge, there’s no position for the Devil’s Advocate to defend this, just make it stop! Please…
