For centuries, Spanish explorers, U.S. Army troops, wagon train emigrants and railroad surveyors carved their names on a huge sandstone outcrop in what's now a national monument famed for those inscriptions. But the softness of the rock that allowed names to be chipped into the cliff at El Morro National Monument also is letting those signatures erode — jeopardizing the history the park is meant to protect. Swiss mining group Xstrata announced on Monday the sale of its 70-percent stake in El Morro SCM, which controls the Chilean mine El Morro, to Barrick Gold Corporation for 465 million dollars (317 million euros). The transaction, carried out by Xstrata's subsidiary Xstrata Copper, should be completed by January 30, 2010. "The sale of our stake in the El Morro project will enable us to better direct resources toward other priority projects, of which five will be entering their final phase in the coming months," Xstrata Copper director Charlie Sartain said in a statement.
