Being members of the "elitist, liberal media" such as we are, Derrick and I feel the need to get out and hob-knob with our fellow members of the "upper crust" from time to time, and last night we joined the creme de la creme of Austin society for a soiree @ the Austin Cabaret Theatre to diss the common working men and women, and the way they cling to their guns and religion, as we sipped on champagne and cosmopolitans. She's a real Broadway baby and she turns 87 years old today. There are probably those who only know Elaine Stritch from her Emmy-winning role as Alec Baldwin's mother on "30 Rock." If so, that's a darn shame because she is one of the most dynamic performers to ever hit the Broadway stage. She won the Tony for her one-woman show "Live at Liberty" and let's face it, no one can sing "Ladies Who Lunch" from "Company" the way Miss Stritch can. Enjoy this video: Read Full Story

Liz and Elaine walking down 5th Avenue in 1956. My friend Tom at the New York Times is such a great guy. And NOT just because he invites me to all sorts of great events as his +1, and NOT just because he reads this blog!, but he because he just is. And his partner Phil is a peach too and it all just works. Anyway, he invited me to see Elaine Stritch and Liz Smith in conversation. For a guy who is not working, I seem to be double booked all the time (there, I just cursed my fabulous quotient and now it ... Read Full Story

Last night at the Starlight Fundraising Gala, we ran into James Gandlofini and asked him who was the bigger grump, he or Elaine Stritch, an honoree at the event. "It's even," he told us. "I met her at a Sopranos premiere party where she yelled at me about stuff." What happened? we asked. "Well, she said something nice to me, I turned around and said ,'Thank you,' and I turned back around. She said, 'Don’t you condescend to me you son of a...
