FM transmitters have always been fascinating and one can find thousand examples of them on the internet. Sadly most of them are full of error and miss leading information. Most of them also have low stability and frequency drift, many coils and components which are difficult to find. The output power is often set to several watts with just a transistor or two…..can't fool me. So therefore I decided to construct a simple transmitter with great performances. Some construction achievements I wanted were: # Simple construction # Commonly components # High quality and stability # Low number of coils # High output power The ... Read Full Story

The CBCT or the Core Balance Current Transformer is a current transformer is used for earth fault protection in grounded three phase systems. It is also known as the zero-sequence current transformer. The CBCT is a current transformer through all the three phases are made to pass as in the diagram. Thus the magnetic fluxes caused by the three phase currents cancel each other. The net resultant flux being zero does not induce any current in the secondary of the transformer. Thus the secondary current of the CBCT when all the three phases are healthy is zero. When an earth fault occurs in one ... Read Full Story

The Polarity of current transformers is extremely important. Just like a battery, a current transformer too has a polarity. The polarity determines the direction of the secondary current in relation to the primary current. Wrong connection of the current transformers can cause false operation of the protection relays. Hence, it is vital to ensure that the current transformers are connected with the correct polarity. The following figures shows a setup to test the polarity of a current transformers. A DC source is connected with the positive terminal to P1 and the negative terminal to P2. An analog voltmeter is connected to the secondary terminal ... Read Full Story

The transformer works on the principle of mutual induction between the primary and secondary windings. The induction is caused by the constantly varying magnetic flux that links the two windings. The flux density in the windings is directly proportional to the induced voltage and inversely proportional to the frequency and the number of turns in the winding. Magnetic Flux α Voltage/Frequency Overfluxing is a dangerous situation in which the magnetic flux density increases to extremely high levels. The high flux density can induce excessive eddy currents in the windings and in other conductive parts inside the transformers. The heat generated by these eddy currents ... Read Full Story

Relays can be classified on the basis of their function into five broad categories. They are Protective, Regulating, reclosing synchronism Check and Synchronizing, monitoring and Auxilliary. Protection Relays Protection relays are used in generators, transformers, feeders, transmission lines, etc. The primary function of these relays is to continually monitor a specific parameter such as current, voltage or power and to generate alarm/isolate the system or device in the situation of deviation from set limits for the parameter or a fault. For instance, an overcurrent relay may be programmed to operate when the current in a feeder exceeds a certain predetermined limit. These relays generally ... Read Full Story
