 "so far so good" 2009-10-02
By Sam I Am (Pennsylvania)
I am not much of a techie so I needed a neighbor to help me connect to TV. There seems to be different ways but instructions are not clear or explain why would do it one way or another. I do not like that I can not switch all power off without having to reset clock each time. I guess in time I will get used to this. I think maybe I should have chosen DISH and let the installer do tall the hook ups, and a $40 DVD player

"It's not much of a "recorder" unless you're there to press "record" every time." 2009-10-02
By Farrar Hudkins (New Orleans)
I've had my DR570 for two days and have read the manual twice. When I program the unit to record a show, roughly 85% of the time it simply doesn't record. I have done everything by the book and it still doesn't record. I've tried DVD-RW, DVD-R, and DVD+R, and it still doesn't record. That's a staggering failure rate.

Ah-ha -- but when I walk into the room minutes after it's supposed to have started recording, I can turn the unit on, then off again, and the unit will start to record! Brilliant! But pointless.

Since one of the DR570's main selling points is that it you can program it to record using a timer, this unit fails in a very large and grand manner. In my opinion, Toshiba might as well have not included the timer/program function in the unit and sold the things for a lot less money to people who want to record something they're already watching.

Note: I still love my Toshiba HD-DVD player. That thing rocks more than pecan waffles.

 "Very Nice VCR Replacement" 2009-09-30
By jimoth001
My new LCD TV and old VCR did not a pretty picture make.

Bought the DR570 to replace the VCR and hopefully upgrade the picture of my recorded programs, which it certainly did. Picture is much improved on an HDTV, even when recording at lower quality settings.

Set-up was easy, just like the VCR it replaced. Note that this unit does contain a digital tuner, so all channels are covered and no converted boxes required.

Timer recording baffles me sometimes with what seems like an awkward time left to record display, but I imaging I'll get used to it.

Also, seems like everyone I know, including myself, have DVD+RWs around. Pick up a couple DVD-RWs as these are more versatile and offer more features with this player.

This is not/will not be used as my source for playing DVDs, so I have no comments on that particular aspect.

Happy with my purchase and fits my needs to replace a VCR without having to go down the DVR route.

"just a few minor annoyances" 2009-09-29
By A-Tom (Charlotte, NC)
I got the unit today and so far it seems pretty good. Does what it's supposed to.

But there are three little things that I wish were different:

1) The S-video input in the front either doesn't work or has some secret to it to get it to work that I have yet to uncover.

2) It uses a different numbering system for the digital channels than what my TV (and cable company) does. As a result, what I know as 240-1 becomes 83-1 and 250-3 becomes 83-3. It only uses two-digit channels, no 3-digit channels.

3) It lumps multiple channels into the same channel number, separated only by what it calls "minor" channels. And you cannot add or delete individual minor channels -- it's all or nothing. As a result, you cannot add 83-1 and 83-3 (Fox and CW) and simultaneously delete 83-2 and 83-4 (weather and low-grade copy of CW).

 "Toshiba DVD recorder/player" 2009-09-23
By T. Perkins
The product is somewhat noisy but acceptable. The ease of use is somewhat difficult but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad. It would be nice to have the labels on the buttons on the remote a little bit easier to see in a darkened room. It has otherwise lived up to my expectations. I can certainly recommend it at this time.
