This limited edition of Ellen von Unwerth’s photographs is a gorgeous celebration of Fräu power. Here the models vamp it up in 1930s style. Long-legged beauties strut, pout, and prance provocatively, conjuring visual tales reminiscent of wicked Weimar, Helmet Newton, Isherwood’s novel Goodbye to Berlin. Flirtation may lead to orgy as Unwerth’s models transcend the fashion spread with paganish glee…transform themselves into edgy, Germanic goddesses before the lens. I finally made it to the end the Ellen von Unwerth rabbit hole by finding these images of her ad campaign for Chantal Thomass a few years back. Rosie Huntington-Whitely is quickly becoming one of my favorite lingerie models, but I have to say Melissa Rose Haro (her dark haired companion) doesn't look too bad herself. Finding these images of a lingerie-clad Beyonce, Monica Belluci, Claudia Schiffer, and Dita von Teese felt like hitting the proverbial jackpot. I'm simply amazed at von Unwerth's versatility. You can recognize her style in every shot, but she still manages to do something new. Perhaps that's because her philosophy is "Women are not just there to be admired, they are there to be enjoyed." Ellen von Unwerth on her favorite photo: "I took this maybe three years ago, on a fashion shoot for Italian Vogue. We developed a romantic story to go with it: a woman comes back to the place where she grew up, and finds it all dusty and falling apart. We shot it in a chateau in Paris. The girl was a model, and it was the only time I worked with her. After this, she disappeared. She was from eastern Europe, Romania maybe, and even the agency...
