36 Hours in Prague - Emily Carlson

The Café Savoy, a throwback to an earlier era in Prague. By EVAN RAIL, The New York Times FORGET all thoughts of Kafka, post-communist grit and writers trying to craft the Great American Novel, as most of the old ideas about Prague are now very far off the mark. Instead, expect a modern, extremely liveable city that is among the most Western (both literally and figuratively) of all the former Communist-bloc capitals, where long-held myths about Eastern Europe are exploded on a daily basis... Barcelona

Barcelona Emily Carlson traveled to Barcelona on her 6 month study abroad overseas. Barcelona was amazing.. I loved the sangria, Picasso museum, and the quaint cobblestone streets. My friends and I were able to walk almost everywhere in Barcelona. Although some places were quite a hike, we managed to get everywhere by foot. My favorite part of the trip was the Gaudi architecture. In particular La Sagrada Familia was amazing... (we actually climbed to the top) Park Guell was art decco looking... Read Full Story

Brussels - Emily Carlson

This picture is the lasting memory I will always have of Brussels. I was there with my friend for only about a day and a half. Brussels was our layover on the way to Amsterdam. I don't even know how we decided to see this monstrosity, but we took a really really long train ride because we wanted to see what it was all about. It wasn't really worth the trip. There were all these funky rooms inside the atom, built for the World's Fair. It might have been cool when it was first built, but now... Read Full Story

Dublin

Dublin Another one of my stops on my study abroad trip. I loved this trip because we went on a student bus tour. Yes, hole in the wall hostels. Yes, bad showers. But... 200 percent fun! We had a really attractive looking leader, we sang songs on the bus, and we went to every little pub along the way! This picture is of Dublin castle, which is right in the middle of the city. The best part of out trip was that we were in Dublin ON St. Patrick's Day! We flew in in the morning, and people were... Read Full Story

Edinburgh

Scotland! Emily Carlson went to Scotland during her study abroad program. I LOVED Scotland. It was like stepping back into medieval times. Castles everywhere! I really enjoyed visiting Edinburgh Castle. You can't miss it! It's right on a hill in the middle of downtown, and the views are amazing. It's worth the entrance fee. The charm of Edinburgh is undeniable. From the men in kilts playing the bagpipes to the cozy pubs with excellent service, I loved this trip. There's even a Starbucks... Read Full Story

Fresno

It's a city in the middle of California, so not it's not going to be as popular as San Francisco or Los Angeles or San Diego, but Fresno is a great place to visit. It's very warm, pleasant with lots of parks. I really enjoyed Fresno. It's a medium sized city, great suburbs and lots of Starbucks! It was really funny. I saw Starbucks everywhere, and I got to try the great fare of Jack in the Box. Tacos, burgers, sandwiches, Jack in the Box was very, um, interesting. There was a very pretty... Read Full Story

Hidden Tokyo - Emily Carlson

A doorman at Le Baron in Tokyo, which is harder to find than its parent club in Paris. Ko Sasaki for The New York Times It was the middle of the night as a Japanese skateboarder and concert promoter named Chris led me through Tokyo 's Shibuya district — a sort of futuristic Times Square — with its hyper-commercial vertical sprawl of glass office towers and flashing neon billboards advertising the latest cellphones and pop stars. We threaded past the sleeping shopping malls and shiny... Read Full Story

Kansas City

Take me to the Plaza anyday. Yes, it's no Paris, and it's certainly not like Rome, but don't knock it till you've been there... Kansas City is charming and unique. The city of fountains, you can find a bubbly delight on almost any block on any street. Kansas City is not just in Kansas, but in Missouri too. That's where you can find the best outdoor shopping mall around (this is coming from an expert... I live right by the Mall of America!) The Plaza has everything you could ever want, with... Liverpool

It was Valentine's weekend and my friend Nicole and I didn't really want to sit in London and watch all our friends go out with their dates. What was the other last minute option? Go on our school sponsored trip to Liverpool, England and see the Beatles museum. Sure, why not? After a train, a bus, and a very long walk, we arrived at the Holiday Inn. We were crabby, but we got a free dinner, which is a VERY big plus, almost worth the trip if you've been living in London with a very strong... Read Full Story
