By Tom Sanderrs Governments, as well as various environmental organizations encourage people to save energy due to the fact that the energy crisis is worldwide getting worse. Taking advantage of energy efficient light bulbs is one of the best and simplest ways to help save energy and do something good for the environment. As a bonus, using energy efficient light bulbs will not only save energy but also save you money. You can actually save hundreds of dollars a year on your energy bill just by changing the types of light bulbs you use. Most people do not realize what the differences are between ... Read Full Story

FL lights no longer provide just a dim flicker. Yes they are the environmental option to normal light bulbs, but they can also be interesting and are a favourite of modern designers. So why are they a good green alternative, and what’s so cool about them? Any electrician will tell you that fluorescent lights have a tendency to last four to ten times as long as incandescent (filament) light bulbs and use around 20% of the energy. The trouble with incandescent light bulbs is that 95% of the electricity they use is lost through heat and merely 5% is actually used to light up ... Read Full Story

By Abigail Monot Great kitchen lighting design typically utilises a large amount of lighting (which means more than just installing a few extra ceiling roses). Kitchen lighting needs a variety of types of lighting for different areas and purposes. The absolutely worst way to illuminate a kitchen is using bright fluorescent ceiling strip lights. They're certainly very bright - but also flat, cold and guaranteed to give you a headache into the bargain. Clearly, a major problem with central ceiling roses in a kitchen is that they create dark spots and you are always casting your own shadow onto worktops. A popular solution is ... Read Full Story

All over the world, the "Green Movement is gaining momentum. Never before has such an awareness of what damage we are doing to this planet been in the forefront. The problem is that with all the media hype, most people think it's too hard a job to go green. In truth, there are literally thousands of easy ways to go green. One of the most cost efficient and easiest ways to go green is to switch from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's). by Ethan Melandri Driving late at night, especially on dark unlit roads can often make your headlight bulbs feel as powerful as a candle in a jam jar. Unfortunately very few drivers realise that they can easily replace their existing halogen headlight bulbs with the very latest upgrade xenon bulbs. These high performance bulbs emit up to 90 percent more light than halogen, are completely road legal and can be fitted without the need for any modifications. Headlight Bulbs - A Very Brief History! Before going into how xenon lights will enhance your visibility, the history of headlight bulbs should be discussed. Headlights began ... Read Full Story

Ways to Reduce Household Waste

  • Do not purchase products with excessive or unnecessary packaging.
  • Purchase products in the largest size practical so as to reduce the product:packaging ratio. However, do not purchase products in larger quantities than you will actually use, and be aware that having a larger quantity on hand may cause you to use more of the product than you would have ordinarily used.
  • Use and reuse gift bags in place of gift wrap.
  • Bring your own bags or boxes along when shopping to carry your purchases home.
  • Put off purchases whenever possible. You will often find that you didn't really need the item.
  • Use rechargeable batteries instead of conventional batteries.
  • Compost

The battle of the light bulb may not be quite over. While traditional incandescents will soon be phased out in the United States and abroad, researchers are plugging away to create more efficient versions that comply with looming new standards — while also providing an alternative for consumers who find compact fluorescents objectionable [The New [...]

There is a new project in the works from scientists at the University of Rochester with the ability to make incandescent light bulbs more energy efficient as well as brighter than ever before. All it takes is a few bright UofR scientists, a powerful laser and a few quadrillionths of a second.

LED light bulbs like the one above are cool.  The one we got is 2.5W and it’s equivalent to a 45W incandescent light bulb.  There are 7 led lights inside that power the thing.  LED lights should be what we all move to but the investments made in cfls (contains mercury, higher wattage) has everyone [...]

The Light Up The World Foundation (Lutw) aims to bring efficient, durable and near permanent White Light Emitting Diodes (WLED) lighting solutions powered by renewable energy to the world's poor in ecologically sensitive and remote rural areas. Lutw support their engagement by quoting Lawrence...

Ways to Reduce Water Usage

  • Install water-saving showerheads, faucets, and toilets.
  • Take showers instead of baths.
  • Take shorter showers.
  • Use the light cycle when using a dishwasher on dishes that aren't extremely dirty. Try the same when using a washing machine.
  •  Install a water softener if your water is "hard".
  •  Water outdoor plants early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation.
  • Use a public swimming pool instead of purchasing your own.
  • Fix leaky pipes and plumbing fixtures in your home's plumbing system. Toilet tank leaks are easily detected by adding a few drops of food coloring to the water reservoir. If the water in the toilet bowl becomes dyed, water is leaking from the tank and the valve should be repaired or replaced.
  •  Lower the water level of your toilet's water reservoir. Be careful not to lower it to the point that it does not flush adequately. If your toilet's flush mechanism does not allow an easy way to lower the water level, place a brick or glass jar filled with water into the water tank, clear of the flush mechanism, to displace water.

Ways to Reduce Lighting Costs

  • Take advantage of sunlight and leave lights off during the day. If possible, adjust your daily routine to align your waking hours with sunlit hours.
  • Replace incandescent night lights with LED or eletroluminescent lights.
  • Don't use excessive holiday lighting.
  • Dust light bulbs occasionally to increase light levels.
  • Use limited, focused lighting when performing a task in a small area instead of lighting the entire room.
  • Choose light fixtures that require fewer bulbs, or unscrew some of the bulbs in existing fixtures.
  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs in place of conventional incandescent light bulbs. A CFL uses approximately one-fourth the wattage of an incandescent bulb producing a similar level of illumination, and they last 8,000 to 10,000 hours. The savings in electricity typically amounts to over $30 per replaced bulb. Replace your most-used bulbs first for maximum savings.
  • Install motion-detection switches or timers for outdoor lighting rather than leaving lights on all night.
  • Install dimmer switches for incandescent light fixtures so you can use less light when less is needed. Most CFLs and other fluorescent bulbs are not designed for use with a dimmer.
