The word "has both currency and potential longevity," explained Christine Lindberg, Oxford's senior lexicographer on the OUP Blog. The choice of this year's word is telling because the act of unfriending (or defriending) is part of the normal...

Are adverbs mere adjective spinoffs?
From noticing the pedantic correction of adjective use where adverb use would be more appropriate, I've developed a fascination with the adverb. I even developed an entire theory of its development in the English language, but unfortunately it is based on no actual research. I am now curious how far off the mark it is.
Many "modern" adverbs seem to be the result of the adjective+"ly" construction...

Yesterday, the Oxford University Press announced its 2009 Word of the Year: "unfriend." For the dwindling minority of Internet users who haven't at least looked at a social-networking site like Facebook, the verb refers to the act of removing somebody from your "friends list" -- the contingent of people whose news appears when you log into the site. More from Italian 101
Well, we are now on Il Passato Prossimo. What we have here is a compound verb form combined with either essere or avere + the past participle. Past Participles in Italian are a bear. I think practically every one of them is irregular, not to mention the fact that one must understand which auxiliary verb goes with the past participle. Suffice to say, you need to practice this stuff.
We’ve been working on this verb tense...
