Museums: Hemingway Home and Museum, Key West, FL

Key West’s reputation for being a haven to artists and creative types was largely spurred by the residency of this legendary Pulitzer Prize winning author. Ernest Hemingway first came to Key West in 1929 with his second wife Pauline Pfieffer after their residency in Paris. "It’s the best place I’ve ever been anytime, anywhere, flowers, tamarind trees, guava trees, coconut palms... Got tight last night on absinthe and did knife tricks," Hemingway said of Key West. After renting an apartment and a house for a few years, the Hemingways purchased this home in 1931 where they resided for the rest of the decade and Hemingway wrote much of his major work inside his writing studio at the back of the property including A Farewell to Arms. In the afternoons, sport fishing in the tranquil blue waters of Key West became a much-loved pastime for Hemingway. The home, its charm, and its cats have been preserved lovingly for today’s visitors to get a taste for the blusters of this wild island that Hemingway inhabited years ago. Opt for the guided tour with a well-informed Hemingway enthusiast and you will go home with plenty of fun facts and insight of this most fascinating author (907 Whitehead Street, 305-294-1136).
