Five Children Die in Bizarre Murder-Suicide

An entire family of seven was wiped out today as a laid off medical technician, distraught over losing his job, killed his wife, children, and ultimately himself.

Ervin and Ana Lupoe were released from the Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center recently. Ervin told a Los Angeles television station in a fax sent just after he killed his family that it was that loss that drove him to murder and to suicide. Just before sending the fax, Ervin had dialed 911 and told the dispatcher he found his entire family shot to death. Just after sending the fax, he shot himself as well.

Police arrived on the scene to find the entire family dead, but were slow to release details to news outlets, announcing that they had found a suicide letter, but withholding its contents.

Ervin said in the letter faxed to KABC-TV (read full text here) that his wife had suggested the couple kill themselves, "and why leave our children in someone's else's hands?" Ervin and Ana both looked happy and involved with their family on their matching facebook.com pages. In pictures they smile with their kids: Brittney, 8; twin girls Jaszmin and Jassely, 5; and twin boys Benjamin and Christian, 2.

In Ervin's letter to the television station, he went on to explain that he felt he had been treated badly at Kaiser Permanente and that one administrator had even told him "You should not even had bothered to come to work today you should have blown your brains out."

LAPD Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner expressed his astonishment over the incident to the LA Times.

"In these tough economic times, there are other options,"  Garner said. "In my 32 years, I've never seen anything like this."
