A community portal about Escherichia coli with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Escherichia coli, usually abbreviated to E. coli, was discovered by Theodor Escherich, a German pediatrician and bacteriologist. It is one of the main species of bacteria living in the lower intestines of mammals, known as gut flora. The number of individual E. coli bacteria in the feces that a human excretes in one day averages between 100 billion and 10 trillion, however the bacteria is not confined to this environment, and specimens have also been located on the edge of hot springs. The E. coli strain O157:H7 is one of hundreds of strains of the bacterium E. coli that causes illness in humans, according to US Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Background: As one of human pathogens, the genome of Uropathogenic Escherichia coli strain CFT073 was sequenced and published in 2002, which was significant in pathogenetic bacterial genomics research. However, the current RefSeq annotation of this pathogen is now outdated to some degree, due to missing or misannotation of some essential genes associated with its virulence. We carried out a systematic reannotation by combining automated...

LT-IIb, a type II heat-labile enterotoxin of Escherichia coli, is a potent immunologic adjuvant with high affinity binding for ganglioside GD1a. Earlier study suggested that LT-IIb bound preferentially to the terminal sugar sequence NeuAc2-3Galβ1-3GalNAc. However, studies in our laboratory suggested a less restrictive binding epitope. LT-IIb(T13I), an LT-IIb variant, engineered by a single isoleucine-threonine substitution, retains biological...

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) reports that the total number of confirmed cases of E Coli O157 linked to Godstone Farm in Surrey remains 93. No cases are currently in hospital Notes - Escherichia coli (commonly referred to as E coli) O157 bacteria usually cause diarrhoea which settles within seven days without treatment. The diarrhoea may contain blood.

Scientists have discovered how certain bacteria such as Escherichia coli have evolved to capture rare sugars from their environment giving them an evolutionary advantage in naturally competitive environments like the human gut.
