The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual competition held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), in which participating countries each submit a song to be performed on live television; then proceed to cast votes for the other countries' songs, in order to find the most popular song in the competition. Each country participates via one of their national EBU-member television stations, whose task it is to select a singer and a song to go forward to represent the country in the international competition.
It’s Eurovision Song Contest Week!
To most people in the United States the Eurovision Song Contest means nothing. But across Europe, mention the word Eurovision and most everybody knows what you’re talking about - and has an opinion about it!
Well, it’s that time of year again, and today marks the week of Eurovision. Because so many countries now participate - 42 this year - the event has been divided into two semi-finals, with the Grand Final this Saturday, May 16.
As I’ve already created a couple of lenses (3 actually), I couldn’t let this year’s competition pass without making a 2009 version. All the participating song videos are included, along with a poll to vote for your favorite. I’ve also tried to give a flavor of what the Contest is all about.
