The Apprentice
For several years now Donald Trump has had a popular show on television called “The Apprentice”. Trump is an American billionaire who lives at a different level than the average business person. He is idolized by many in the business world for his deft touch at closing deals and living “the high life”. Many would love to live at this level too, so the T.V. show tries to capitalize on that. Would-be contestants are called to compete with each other for the prize of being Trump’s exclusive apprentice and reigning with him in his organisation. The one who perseveres to the end and is chosen by Trump, wins. It’s been a very popular show. This is almost exactly what our relationship with Jesus Christ is like. He, too, lives at a different level. Hundreds of millions of people all over the world worship Him, and would love to live “the high life” that He lives – one day reigning with Him as well. And just as with the television show, “Many are called, but few are chosen” (Matt 22:14).
In Trump’s show the contestants are learning “the art of the deal”. It’s pure and simple disciple-making, and they are called to sacrifice everything else while they follow Trump – their businesses, their families, everything. They are also thrown into many difficult and varied business tasks so that Trump can weed out those who are less committed from those who deserve his reward. The whole process is like a refiner’s fire. A lot of suffering and learning takes place.
This is God’s way, too. In fact, He authored it! As eager disciples we too want to be co-regents with Christ one day too. So God throws us into various circumstances in order to sift us, strengthen us, and test us. The prize is to be His personal co-regent, reigning eternally with Him at a much higher level. “Many are called, but few are chosen.” And the process is taking place right now. “He who perseveres to the end shall be saved.” (Matt 24:13)
But it’s only if we have the same passion, dedication, and vision of glory that Trump’s apprentices have that we will be willing to “fight the good fight”, persevere, and eventually reign with Christ in his organization.
This, then, is why He's trying to spiritually train us now. It's not to gain salvation -- that comes through faith -- but to gain the reward of eternally co-reigning with Him at a different level. Not everyone in Trump's organization lives at the same level as him. The same will be true in eternity for God's children. While we may all be saved from damnation by the blood of Christ, we will live at different levels of service to Him according to our deeds in the Body now.
I don't know about you, but I want to be chosen to be His eternal apprentice.
