Can Creation & Evolution Co-Exist?

"By faith we understand that the universe was create by the Word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible." (Hebrews 11:3)

We Christians used to unswervingly believe that until about one hundred years ago. Not so much anymore. Many Christians have abandoned the declared Word of God on this issue in favor of either outright evolution, or an unholy mix of Darwin and Jesus.

"Today, many religious denominations accept that biological evolution has produced the diversity of living things over billions of years of Earth’s history. Many have issued statements observing that evolution and the tenets of their faiths are compatible. Scientists and theologians have written eloquently about their awe and wonder at the history of the universe and of life on this planet, explaining that they see no conflict between their faith in God and the evidence for evolution. Religious denominations that do not accept the occurrence of evolution tend to be those that believe in strictly literal interpretations of religious texts." (Science, Evolution, and Creationism, National Academy of Sciences)

Hmmm. I guess I must be one of those boneheads that takes God at His Word.

I was recently reading through the first few chapters of Jeremiah, and I was struck by how hurt God was that Israel had abandoned Him in favor of "trees and stones". Let me explain -- but first let me preface it with some prophetic words from the book of Romans.

"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.......they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen." (1:21,25)

This, friends, is where many professing Christians are at today. Although they claim to know God, they give Him little glory in His creation, and have allowed their thinking to become futile, foolish, and dark. They have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and prefer to worship and serve created things rather than the Creator. And has anything been more fabricated and sold than the case for evolution, which denies the truth of Hebrews 11:3?

So, let's look at God's heart in Jeremiah. He's deeply wounded by Israel's fornication with the gods (philosophies) of the world. It reminds me of Paul's admonition in Colossians 2:8 - "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ."

After rescuing Israel from slavery to the world, and taking her into His Promised Land, "when you came in you defiled My land and made My heritage an abomination." (Jer. 2:7) Her prophets chose to speak words of wisdom from other sources than God.

"Has there ever been such a thing?" God asks Israel. "Has a nation ever changed its gods even though they are no gods? But My people have exchanged their glory for that which does not profit." (2:10,11)

"What do you gain by going to Egypt to drink the waters of the Nile? Or what do you gain by going to Assyria to drink the waters of the Euphrates? Your evil will chastise you and your apostasy will reprove you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the Lord your God." (2:18,19)

And now, the coup de'gras. "Their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets all say to a tree, You are my father, and to a stone, You gave me birth." (2:26,27)

How many Christians and their leaders today have done EXACTLY THE SAME THING in order to accommodate the prevailing "evidence" offered by the world? How many Christians have dismissed the creation account in Genesis as simply "inaccurate, misinterpreted, a Jewish folk tale which sought to explain the unknown"?

This is pure idolatry in the same sense as we read about in Jeremiah. Many Christians today no longer accept by faith the divine account that God spoke creation into existence out of nothing. Rather, they believe that it is altogether possible that man and animals DID evolve from "trees and stones", and that what is seen WAS made out of things that were visible -- they just evolved.

May God forgive us for this unholy alliance! May God forgive us for calling Him both deceitful and a liar.

Can creation and evolution co-exist for the modern Christian? Not if we want to be faithful to God and His Word, it can't. For if He misled us about the "old creation", then how can we possibly trust Him about the "new creation" in Jesus Christ?
