One Happy God

Did you know that we have an infinitely HAPPY GOD?

When John the Apostle saw his revelation of Jesus on the Island of Patmos, he says: "His face was like the sun shining in full strength" (Rev. 1:16). We can only assume that that since Jesus was back with His Father again, He was experiencing that climactic joy and pleasure that had been missing while He toiled with us here on earth (Philippians 2:7); a happiness that we all long to taste.
I think that the greater part of God's glory is His radiant happiness. Jonathan Edwards, an 18th century preacher said, "Part of God's fullness which He communicates, is his happiness. This happiness consists in enjoying and rejoicing in Himself; so does the creature's happiness."
Now, Edwards isn't saying that our happiness depends on rejoicing in ourselves (the whole 'self-esteem' thing), but that our happiness depends on enjoying God. That's what carries us when things get tough! I've preached for years that true happiness does not come from our circumstances; it must come from knowing God. If that weren't true, then God Himself would be rather unhappy, because there are a lot of heartaches surrounding Him from planet Earth.

But God's happiness is found in Himself -- His perfections, His infinite love, His abundant grace and mercy. And that's a picture I want to always keep in front of me.
The heart of God is infinitely happy!
