A Walk On The Beach

"How great are Your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep." (Psalm 92:5)

"And there are many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen." (John 21:25)

Life is a beach, isn't it? There are so many things to explore, so many things to experience.

The shoreline represents my life. It's the starting point from which I can spring in many directions. To the one side of me is a massive ocean. This represents God and eternity. He's there for my exploration, and from time to time He likes to move into my world and tickle my feet with His tide(ings). On the other side is the world. A forest of opportunities! A jungle of mysteries and dangers.

Too many of us spend our lives on the beach, uncommitted to God and eternity. We spend much of our time in the world's forest of opportunities, only occasionally (maybe Sundays?) coming back to the beach for a little R&R. We hope to get our feet wet in the things of God, but before we know it the forest calls us back again. And back we go, like pygmies in the jungle.

It's a shame, really -- and it breaks the heart of God. Because there
on the beach, at our feet, lies a vast ocean of eternal pleasures. The Wind beckons us to come explore. "Plumb the depths of My grace and glory. Sail the surface of My eternal deeps."

But too many of are too busy with the demands of the forest. We're too busy to sail the seas of God's beauty. We're too busy cutting through all the undergrowth. We're too occupied with "jungle love" to spend a few hours, much less months or years, in deep-sea diving. We're just happy to be at the beach every now and then, feeling the trickle of eternity swirl around our feet; waiting for something divine to wash up on shore for a little look. And when the Boatman comes by and shouts "Come sail away with Me. I'll make you fishers of men", we think, "Sorry, no can do. I've got fields and commitments that cost a pretty sum. Pray hold me excused, I cannot come."

One day death will arrive. And we'll be sent out on that ocean for eternity. There will be no more forest to demand our time. The ocean will control us then. And if you haven't learned how to plumb her depths before you die -- if you haven't learned how to explore God's Seven Seas -- you'll find yourself adrift and alone on a tiny little island watching all the others who learned the art of exploring God go sailing and diving till their heart's content.

Is that what you really want? Think about it for a minute. If you were put on a beach and told that in about 72 years you'll be sent out on the ocean for eternity, wouldn't you be smart to learn how to navigate and explore that ocean right beside you? Wouldn't you be stupid to say, "Well, then, I'll just spend my time in this tiny jungle until the jig is up"?

Rev 22:12
Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me

Matt 13:12-13
For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

How's your walk on the beach going these days?
