Stories and links to stories about everyday heroes. You know the ones, the single mom, the guy who shovels the neighbour's walk, the boy who stops a bully, the victim who becomes a survivor. They're all around us. We have what's called a "blog carnival" once a week where people contribute their stories and we post them.

A timely reminder of the dangers of the world we leave to our kids The prize doesn’t always go to the most deserving Irena Sendler There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the WarsawGhetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ‘ulterior motive’ …. She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews, (being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids..) She also had a dog in the ... Read Full Story

specifically, THIS dog: i can’t understand the spanish commentator, but it’s not hard to imagine what he must be saying. there are some human beings as brave, even braver, than this hero dog. irena sendler , who died last year, was one of them. i just learned about this amazing woman, and i am not likely to forget her story, even with my astoundingly crappy memory. i challenge you to watch this account of her life without tears: i’ve often wondered, as perhaps some of you have wondered, what would i really do in a life-or-death situation: save myself, or try to save another? ... She carried larger children out in a burlap sack. Irena also had a dog, which she trained to bark at Nazi soldiers. The soldiers wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered any noises from ... Read Full Story

I recently saw The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler , a Hallmark Hall of Fame production broadcast by CBS on April 19, 2009. It is based on the biography written by Anna Mieszkowska, Mother of the Children of the Holocaust: The Irena Sendler Story . Irena Sendler's story is almost unbelievable, but it is true. During World War II, she was an activist of the Polish anti-Holocaust resistance in Warsaw, where she helped to save more than 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto by providing them with false documents and hiding places in individual and group homes outside of the Ghetto. Sendler got ... Read Full Story
