Total investment funding in the Mafia Wars maker rises to US$219 million. The New York Times reports that investor Digital Sky Technologies, which has offices in Moscow and London, is leading this latest funding round in the social networks gaming company. Facebook gaming powerhouse Zynga, the San Francisco-based company behind social gaming phenomena Mafia Wars and FarmVille, is receiving $180 million in a new deal with Russian investment firm Digital Sky Technologies (D.S.T.). About 50 of my Facebook friends play either FarmVille or Mafia Wars. I know this because I have been made aware in my Facebook Live Feed of every animal found or adversary attacked. Remember when no one knew how to turn the FarmVille/Mafia Wars announcements off? But I digress.

Lots of people ask me why I don't play FarmVille or Mafia Wars on Facebook. The truth is I waste most of my online time on this blog. I don't need anymore Web distractions unless it is something shocking like this. Time Magazine's Belinda Luscombe has an article on the company behind the popluar games Zynga got its start. Rumor had it that Zynga, the maker of 'FarmVille' and other social games on Facebook, was angling toward an IPO '” the coveted initial public offering on Wall Street. Instead, Zynga zagged toward DST '” as in Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian firm that has embraced Internet-based capitalism with a vengeance and has now added Zynga to its investment portfolio as the leading player in a deal valued at $180 million.
