Too Much Sugar -- Too Little Sex?
Some surprising links about sugar and sex appeared in a research article found the The Journal of Clinical Investigation, November 8, 2007. As a nutrition researcher, I have known for quite some time about the numerous ill effects of too many simple sugars in our diet. Table sugar is made up of glucose and fructose, and the average American eats over 2 lbs. of sugar every week! Blood glucose levels rise every time we consume food. No problem! When flooding our body with excessive sugar, a big problem arises. Not only are there obvious sugars in colas and desserts, but high fructose corn syrup and other hidden sugars are in nearly everything we eat. What does this have to do with our sex hormones? The study cited above shows that it is not so much high levels of insulin that deactivate the protein, SHBG, (which controls testosterome and estrogen levels as a hormone binding globulin) but, rather, the metabolism of sugar by the liver that is critical. Where excessive sugar is present, the liver will increase the production of lipids and reduce the needed SHBG protein in the blood.
Perhaps this new information will give cause for more prudence with our sugar consumption! One way to combat bad habits is to replace our high sugar diet with more fruits and vegetables and give our body the nutrition it needs. When our busy lives prevent this, we should find a way to supplement. That is why The Feast is what my friends and family choose to be assured that they have the daily nutritional requirements that are required to maintain optimal health.
