There are several different types of hoses used by fire fighters. Most commonly, fire hoses consist of at least one layer of woven material on the out layer, with in interior rubber lining. There are two fields of fire hoses; those meant to operate under negative pressure, and those meant to operate under positive pressure. In an effort to reach an expanded audience for the Tall Timbers E.V. Komarek Fire Ecology Database , the Library is helping create a new web-based gateway for fire information called the Southern Fire Portal (SFP). The goal of the SFP is to provide portal users with single point access to fire data, documents, projects, tools, and websites related to fire and natural resource management in the southern United States. The news is full of the fires in Los Angeles, which makes my blood run cold. September fires—often riled by Santana Winds which seem not to be blowing now—were a feature of my San Diego childhood. We lived in town, near the ocean, but that did not prevent the skies from growing dark with smoke several times as wildfires raged in the back country.
