Firefly is a Joss Whedon Space Western named for the model of space ship -- "Firefly-class"-- captain Malcolm Reynolds (former soap star Nathan Fillion) adopts to carry out his outlaw interplanetary trading (piracy).
The show follows the exploits of Reynolds, a still-loyal ex-soldier for the "wrong" side, and his fellow renegade veteran (Gina Torres, who did a stint as Cleopatra in the Hercules series). The ship, a bit of a junkbox with Torres' husband as pilot, takes on crack mechanic Kaylee, and then some supposedly paying passengers: a girl, River, who turns out to be a psychic, government weapon on the lam; her brother Simon (conveniently a doctor), a hot-headed soldier of fortune (Jayne, played by Adam Baldwin), and occasionally the cortisan Inara (Morena Baccarin). In taking on passengers, the Firefly inherits each one's "baggage" and spends more time evading these attendant aventures than ever making a living.
Among other fun characteristics that make the show unique, the pirates speak a markedly idiomatic vocabulary. The show has spawned a comic series and a film, and fans hopefully await a film sequel -- no sign of that yet.
Little known fact: Firefly was also the name of a pod model in the 1960s Gerry Anderson marionation series Thunderbirds. Tribute or trip-up?
Depressing as it may be, Fox and whoever else that has had the opportunity have still not realized the must-happen decision that needs to be made to bring Firefly back from the dead. Proving that even the actors involved in the show are just as faithful to that "you can't take the sky from me" mentality as us crazy Browncoat fans, Captain Malcolm Reynolds ( Nathan Fillion ) himself has been bringing plenty of Serenity flare to his current gig, Castle . It began with random and subtle... Read Full Story
Men are busy creatures. There's the hunting and scavenging for food. The protection of the women and children. The bowling and softball leagues. And because of their limited time, men must be picky and choosy about what they will watch on the television (that is in no way sports related). Since it's still the boring summer months, when awesome television like Lost and The Office and 30 Rock and CSI: New York (just testing to see if you're paying attention) is on vacation, The Common Man has... Joss Whedon's space western is coming to HD. by dares Fox Home Entertainment has confirmed that Joss Whedon's Firefly TV series will be released on Blu-Ray sometime soon. The rumors started surfacing earlier this week with a video posted on YouTube, in which Jewel "Kaylee" Staite was asked about the possibility of a sequel to the Serenity movie. She told the audience that she had been asked to participate in a Firefly commentary recording session in the spring. There still no word on a... Read Full Story

The courtesan Inara's character in Firefly is a high-class professional "companion." There's a whole social/cultural aura around her profession as an elite class of woman: Companions call their own shots, embody a spiritual dignity, and manage to command lots of wealth. All in all, they sound a lot like my understanding of historical Eastern courtesans -- India, China, Japan at various points in history. Given the opportunities available to women at any given time, the profession offered... Read Full Story
I consider myself a Nathan Fillion fan, even though I didn't rush right out and see White Noise 2. What does that make me? (Behind.) But Firefly was definitely his vehicle -- you could tell he was into that role. Here's what he said about it after the Firefly run crashed and burned (see delicious interview on imdb.com ) : "I broke the cardinal rule of don't fall in love with what you're doing, because the rug can get yanked out from underneath you, and when it did, I was heartbroken." Boo hoo... Read Full Story
My Joss Whedon fix was partially sated by revisiting some favorite "Buffy" episodes last week, but some serious fun is in store with the July 15 launch of Whedon's " ">">"Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," a three-part musical Internet series with the reamining two parts going up online July 17 and 19. And, happily, the trailer looks hilarious. Just make sure you watch before midnight, July 20, after which, it will no longer be free.
Starring is Whedon frontman Nathan Fillion as a vain... Read Full Story
Tags: firefly , tv , dvd , Serenity , Joss Whedon , Serenity Firefly. The until-recently little-known sci-fi show that never made it. The 2005 movie, Serenity, was the culmination of this show that few people had heard of. I bought the TV series. Everyone should rent it. Think rebel cowboys in space. It's awesome. Serenity as a movie really works better if you watch it after watching all of Firefly. Rumours persist that Universal is ready to film a sequel to the persistently popular... Read Full Story
For one week only, you can watch Joss Whedon’s latest project online for free. Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is a humorous musical story of a low-rent super-villain, a hero who is completely infatuated with himself, and a cute girl from the laundromat.
This Internet miniseries event stars Neil Patrick Harris , Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day . The characters, story, and songs are well-crafted (not that you would expect anything less from Joss Whedon). For those Buffy fans out there, the... Read Full Story
