In the March 2008 monthly meeting of Pensacola Real Estate Navigators , our local Escambia County property appraiser Chris Jones was the guest speaker. I have never met Chris, although I have been friends with other members of his family for many years. The Save our Homes Amendment Property Tax Cap The Florida Constitution was amended effective January 1, 1995, to limit annual increases in assessed value of property with Homestead Exemption to three percent or the change in the Consumer Price Index, whichever is lower (see CPI history ). The Sarasota Herald-Tribune wants the Florida legislature to, " Take a break from tax cuts ". We say keep the ball rolling. As we said before we have three bites at the apple to fix our broken property tax system. We took our first big bite by passing Amendment 1. Now there are two more: 1.) Next have the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission put on the ballot in November constitutional amendments that eliminate or reduce the negative impacts of property taxes and shift the tax burden to a broader fairer sales tax. Again, lawmakers have done nothing to solve the Florida tax problem they created! The Florida House and Senate should have stayed home!!! They slapped together a plan worse than it’s predecessor and doesn’t fix a damn thing! Now, it’s up to voters on January 29th to decide on the latest misguided attempts at solving the FLorida property tax dilemma! WHAT DOES THE PROPOSAL SAY? The $25000 homestead exemption would increase to about $40000. This gives the average homeowner a $240 tax break. WOW!!!! Gary Nikolits, Palm Beach County Property Appraiser, reminds homeowners that there is less than a month left to file for 2008 homestead exemption and portability benefits and has extended office hours for the next three weeks. Extended hours will be available at the service center on the first floor of the Governmental Center at 301 N. Olive Avenue in West Palm Beach, at 3188 PGA Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens and 501 So.
