Kudos to Eric Asimov for featuring the wonders of amari , Italian digestifs. My friends have long heard me sing the praises of these great tasting, wonder-working post-prandial herbal drinks. My nonna prepares her own miracle-working digestivo at home–nocino (walnut liqueur). It’s prepared with cloves, walnuts, spirits and espresso. As with everything she makes, she distills the nocino by instinct, so I will simply have to watch her make it next time I visit Naples . The product we know today came into being in 1902, but it had existed  in similar forms for generations. During the Christmas season of 1902, packaging became an important factor. It was designed with a string attached to it so it could be hung as a Christmas tree ornament.
