Kudos to Eric Asimov for featuring the wonders of amari , Italian digestifs. My friends have long heard me sing the praises of these great tasting, wonder-working post-prandial herbal drinks. My nonna prepares her own miracle-working digestivo at home–nocino (walnut liqueur). It’s prepared with cloves, walnuts, spirits and espresso. As with everything she makes, she distills the nocino by instinct, so I will simply have to watch her make it next time I visit Naples . Click on the bottles above for Asimovs article on ” amari.” Among the commercially available varieties of these digestive elixirs, my favorite is Amaro Avern a. Pick up ... Read Full Story

In total there have been 37 different animals represented since 1902. The current lineup is tiger, cougar, camel, rhinoceros, kangaroo, hippopotamus, bison, lion, ... Read Full Story

The product we know today came into being in 1902, but it had existed  in similar forms for generations. During the Christmas season of 1902, packaging became an important factor. It was designed with a string attached to it so it could be hung as a Christmas tree ornament. In total, there have been 37 different varieties, currently there are 22.  More than 40 million packages of these are sold each year, and they are exported to 17 countries. So many diverse flavors mean that many wines are bound to taste good with at least something you have on your plate. But every year, food and wine magazines and the food sections of newspapers around the nation revisit this topic, and each...

Not that long ago, the idea of respectable non-jug, non-box wines for under $10 -- the kind of wine you could bring to a foodie dinner party without feeling like a cheap asshole -- was pretty unthinkable. Enter Trader Joe's and BevMo and suddenly there's a lot of truly decent cheap wine out there, and we're not just talking about Two-Buck Chuck. We're not huge wine snobs, but we do prefer our reds to be more than just "drinkable," and we...

Filed under: Festivals and Events, Food and Drink, North America, United States, NightlifeLast January, my husband and I took a trip to the Rioja region of Spain. We sampled Rioja wines and visited underground cellars by day, and hopped from bar to bar snacking on tapas and drinking Rioja wines by night. We found that there were several Rioja wines that we loved, at that the tapas served there (while not incredibly creative like those offered...
