All 7 'Harry Potter' Books Will Get New 20th Anniversary Covers
Take my money, J.K..
If you can believe it, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone will turn a whopping 20-years-old this September — well, for U.S. readers at least. (The U.K. version, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was released a year prior.)
To celebrate the momentous book-iversary, Scholastic announced it will release seven new Harry Potter covers, illustrated by artist Brian Selznick.
The covers, which feature all your favorite HP characters, were unveiled today. When lined up next to one another, the books' illustrations create a continuous mural, and represent, "the overarching story that begins with Harry’s arrival at Number Four, Privet Drive, through the epic conclusion of the Battle of Hogwarts," according to Scholastic's press release.
"I’m a huge Harry Potter fan (a proud Hufflepuff!) and to be asked to illustrate the 20th anniversary edition covers was an absolute honor," Selznick said in a statement. "I knew this project came with so much responsibility to the stories, as well as to the readers. I revisited the books and was especially moved by the relationships between the characters in J.K. Rowling’s magical world, so I wanted these covers to reflect that.
"One of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of the process was drawing seven independent covers that would stand on their own, while making sure that they also lined up to create one single satisfying image," Selznick continued in his statement. "It took dozens and dozens of sketches to get it right, and I am thrilled to share my great love for the books with these new illustrations."
The 20th Anniversary Edition books will be available on June 26, with a collectible box set available in Septemeber.
And the anniversary edition books aren't the only thing Potterheads have to look forward to. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child arrives on Broadway later this month, the New-York Historical Society will host a "Harry Potter: A History of Magic" exhibit in October, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald comes to theaters in November.
Huzzah, we're in the midst of a Harry Potter renaissance!
Check out all seven covers below, and let us know your favorite (we're personally loving The Half-Blood Prince's Dumbledore-heavy cover).
