Crossover, Minivan, SUV, Station Wagon, or All Four? At first glance, some might think Ford's timing for creating this giant people mover was unfortunate, as the Flex is a great big, boxy vehicle that straddles many vehicular categories, introduced at a time when all many Americans could talk about is the high cost of gas at the pump. But after spending some quality time with it, the many great features this vehicle offers will help many people see past its great size. I describe it as looking a bit like a Mini Cooper on steroids: Ford describes its provocative shape as a "two-box" and ... Read Full Story

Now that the 2009 Ford Flex has arrived, the Fourth of July celebration at the big campsite in Pinckney, Michigan, will never be the same. There we'll be in the sticky summer heat with our sweaty, loose-fitting clothing, our unruly snot-nosed children, our ugly dogs, our half-broken camp chairs and our tired barbecue grilles, and behind us will sit the rocking, inner-city 2009 Ford Flex, as if a gathering of Scion United had inexplicably landed in the middle of a grassy field in a Michigan township. Will we love the Flex life? Will we play loud music? Will there be tattoos (washable, of course) ... Read Full Story

It's Flexalicious! Ford set out to re-create the family vehicle and from a design point of view, they've certainly done their homework. This vehicle is totally unique in a sea of "me too" crossover vehicles. The two-box shape and unique exterior design details give us a modern interpretation of the classic "woody" wagon. The availability of a contrasting roof color allows you to create your own color combination similar to MINI and the chrome treatment of the grill and tailgate further differentiate it from anything else on the road. While the exterior gets your attention and makes the Flex easy to find in a ... Read Full Story

Ford wants to reinvent how you haul your family around. They think what you need is a roomy, easy to drive, 7 passenger, crossover. What they have come up with is the Ford Flex. Powered by a 3.5-liter 265hp V6, the Flex has got all the motivation it needs to briskly haul it’s over two tons of body mass. A six-speed automatic transmission adds to the refined feel of the powertrain. Also, optional on top of the line models is an advanced all-wheel-drive system. Styling is somewhat intriguing. While it’s obvious that there is inspiration from Ford’s golden years, this boxy family car has ... Read Full Story

Filed under: Crossovers/CUVs , Ford Click above for high-res gallery of our first drive of the 2009 Ford Flex According to Peter Horbury, Ford ’s head of design in North America, the Blue Oval will be shortening the time frame between major styling changes for its models from five years to three. This move is part of a plan to reduce the need for large incentives to move older models that haven’t had a major redesign in 4 - 5 years. Apparently, the company has not seen big sales jumps with its standard practice of giving older models minor facelifts. So, for instance, the ... Read Full Story

Ford is the first automaker to develop and implement environmentally-friendly wheat straw-reinforced plastic in a vehicle. Before you get carried away, the car itself, a Ford Flex, isn’t made of plastic, instead, it’s just the third-row interior storage bins made from the natural fiber-based plastic that contains 20 percent wheat straw bio-filler. Surprisingly though, Ford says this application alone reduces petroleum usage by some 20,000lbs...

Even among people movers, the Ford Flex is particularly versatile; it’s part station wagon, part crossover, and as spacious inside as a semi trailer. Despite finishing fourth in a six-crossover comparison test, the Flex is a unique, well-made, and beautifully packaged vehicle, albeit rather slow and unremarkable to drive with the base 262-hp, 3.5-liter V-6.
