Throw them a peace sign of course. Many of us have taken notice of the recent rise of people searching for their roots. Berkley, Ca protesters have taken it a step further, and returned to the trees. Protesting the removal of over 40 trees to make way for Memorial Stadium, these throw back tree-huggers are on their way down. I personally like living in green spaces. Nashville doesn’t have enough trees. It lacked a good city planner like Frederic Law Olmtead , who built the park areas in Manhattan, Chicago, and my home town of Louisville. It just makes life more tolerable in the ... Read Full Story

Nah, it’s not me, I just like the photo! I click on a free “ save the rainforest ” link every day, but forests in the U.S. are being felled as well, and for an easily avoidable reason: packaging for the country’s insatiable appetite for fast food. The Petition Site is hosting “ Stop the 11 Fast Food Junkies ,” in conjunction with the Asheville, NC based Dogwood Alliance . This is about as simple as it gets. Would you like to conserve resources, help neutralize Co2 emissions, and cut back on the number of trees felled for throwaway consumer items? (A shout-out to Marty Finestone’s Activity Book for the link .) Today’s mitzvah: Reduce your word processing default margin from 1.25" to 1" or less. ... Read Full Story

The first week in May see an enormous change in the landscape here: the trees leaf out. The first tiny leaflets may appear earlier, and did this year when we had a few days of very warm weather. But as long as we've lived here, I've never seen full-blown leaves cover the trees before May 3. This morning is gorgeously clear and a little cool. A grand day for a Jane's Walk! And a good day to watch the leaves appear. As we used to sing at summer camp: To ope their trunks the trees are never seen. How then do they put on ... Read Full Story
