The 2004 Grand Prix of Bahrain marked the first ever round of the FIA Formula One World Championship to be held in the Middle East and the official culmination of a multi-million dollar project started back in September 2002 when the Kingdom of Bahrain signed a long-term deal to host the event.

Located at Sakhir, 30 km south-west of the island's capital, Manama, the Herman Tilke designed circuit contains no less than five track layouts within one complex. Construction began in November 2002.

The track is 5.412 Kms in length. Race cars travel 57 laps around the circuit covering a distance of 308.238 Kms before the chequered flag is waved. in 2004, Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap record on the circuit covering the distance in 1.30.252 seconds.

Trulli takes pole in Bahrain Grand Prix

Italian veteran Jarno Trulli overcame worrying brake problems on his way to seizing pole position for Toyota for Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix.

His Toyota team-mate German Timo Glock took second alongside him to deliver the Japanese team their first lockout of the front row.

It was the fourth pole position of Trulli's career and his first since the Japanese Grand Prix in 2005.

Trulli said: "It wasn't an easy qualifying, things were quite difficult. I had some trouble with my car, the brake pedal was getting longer and longer.

"To be honest, I didn't feel very comfortable for the qualifying lap, I felt more competitive with the race pace.

"But I knew I had a good car and could fight for pole so it was nice to end up with first and second, for the team especially it is great to show what a great result this is.

"But we need to analyse the data to see if we have a problem with the brakes, because I've had a problem so it is a bit of a worry."

Glock, who had clocked the best time just before Trulli beat him for pole, admitted that he felt he could not have beaten Trulli even if he had driven a perfect lap.

"It was not too bad," said Glock. "We found quite a thing overnight. We struggled yesterday with the brakes quite a lot but we made good changes to the car.

"I was surprised I was quickest at the end. I was quite happy with qualifying, but the wind changes, it made the car nervous, so it was quite difficult in Q3.

"Jarno is good at qualifying. I made one mistake and lost a little bit of time, but (even) without that it would not have been good enough for pole."

Despite not taking his maiden pole, Glock was delighted with his team's first front-row lockout.

"We had problems yesterday with the car already and were far away from the test pace, so we had a lot of stuff to change," he said.

"I was pretty happy with the car but in qualifying the wind changed and I struggled a bit in Q1, but I was happy in Q2 and Q3.

"It didn't work out for the pole, but we have to be happy with the first row. Thanks to the team and mechanics because they did a lot of hard work in the past weeks."
