The European Grand Prix is a separate Formula One event that was reintroduced during the mid-1980s and was held regularly from 1993 to 2006. From 2008 it will take place for at least another 7 years. In earlier years, one of the national Grands Prix was also designated as the European Grand Prix. The first race to be so named was the 1923 Italian Grand Prix, held at Monza and won by Carlo Salamano in a Fiat. This entry refers only to those European Grands Prix which were separate world championship events. -- source www.wikipedia.org
Hamilton quickest again
McLaren's championship leader Lewis Hamilton outpaced his Formula One rivals again on day two of testing for next week's German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. The 23-year-old Briton, locked in a three-way tie at the top of the standings with Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen at the halfway point in the season, lapped the circuit in one minute 14.872 seconds.
Germany's Nico Rosberg was second for Williams in 1:15.257 with world champion Raikkonen third in 1:15.296, according to unofficial timings.
Hamilton, who ran away with his home grand prix in the rain at Silverstone last weekend, was also fastest in a wet opening session when he predicted the title battle would go down to the wire.
"My guess is that the championship will be decided at the last race, just like last year, but we will see," the driver, who lost out by a single point to Raikkonen last season, told the McLaren website.
Raikkonen completed 90 laps on a cloudy day with occasional sunshine in the afternoon.
"I am reasonably satisfied with the way things went during these two days of testing," the Finn said.
"I think we will also be competitive on this track, as indeed we have been for the year so far. The speed isn't lacking, but sometimes we haven't managed to put together all the elements," he added.
Hockenheim is returning as venue for the German Grand Prix after a year's absence under an agreement to share the country's race with the Nuerburgring.
